Saturday, July 29  – Kawandi workshop with Michele Vaughan at the Fred Archer Center, 1665 S. La Cholla Blvd. Tucson, AZ 85713.

Learn about traditional Indian hand stitched quilting methods, Kantha and Kawandi and then spend time making a sample Kawandi. A Kawandi is a utility quilt made by African Diaspora/Siddi community of India and is made from fabric scraps and is assembled from the outside in. A spool of thread and a needle, few scraps, and mindful stitching combined with a simple technique are the only elements needed for this age-old art of quilting.

In this workshop, we will make a small sample. Plan to have your sample no larger than about 16×16 so you can finish the sample and see how it comes together working from outside to inside, adding “fula” to the corners, “tikli” to the interior and finishing with a few grains of rice tucked in a pocket.
